State level groups, National groups, PGI convention in WI in 2021 and what to expect
Steve began shooting fireworks about 30 years ago by answering a simple question the wrong way...Hey, are you busy this Saturday? The rest is history as I experienced all the "fun" associated with prepping shows, setting up, shooting, and tearing down all in an 18 hour day. Along with this, you learn a whole new appreciation for the simplicity of the craft as well as the astonishing chemistry behind it. And the biggest take-away is the great group of friends that you develop through a common love of blowing "stuff" up.

MOW HISTORY (AS I REMEMBER IT)

Bob Burgermeister
In the late 1970s, MOW was growing and relying on just a few dedicated members to stay afloat. I jumped in and started swimming with Hans, Leon and the others. We did some interesting and amazing things. A few of our doings irritated National, but we were persistent. Mostly, it was a lot of fun.
Bob Burgermeister joined MOW in 1978. He served as LocSec for three two-year terms and another four years as Past Loc Sec. He also served as Regional Vice Chair for two unopposed terms. He served on numerous National committees during this time. He is a founding Director of Mensa Of Wisconsin Foundation and currently its President. He is a US Army Vietnam veteran, a retired computer professional and a proud grandfather of gifted kids.

BUSINESS, GAMES, AND THE BUSINESS OF GAMES

Gordon Lugauer
Gordon Lugauer, “the” Barrister, himself, talks both about the big-picture of small business, the business of selling games & toys, with time for a couple of nitty-gritty details based on audience questions.

Gordon has been in business since 1995, and in the business of selling games since 2005. His company, Board Game Barrister, Ltd, operates three retail stores, one restaurant (the Oak & Shield Gaming Pub), and a warehouse.
Mr. Lugauer has been a lifetime member of Mensa since the 80’s, which led to playing Scotland Yard, Rail Baron, and Acquire at EJ’s Mensa game nights, later working the Kadon puzzle booth with Kate and Wardi, and - with some intervening years - to giving this talk today.

ANTIPROTON-BASED CANCER THERAPY

Dr. Gerald Jackson
An important treatment method for cancer is radiation therapy. While radiation has distinct advantages over surgery and chemotherapy, there are still significant shortcomings. A potential revolutionary improvement for many types of cancer, especially infant gliomas (brain cancers), utilizes antiprotons in place of protons. This talk reviews the science, history, and state-of-the-art of radiation therapy before describing the benefits of antiprotons. Other medical procedures possible with antiprotons are also introduced.

Gerald Jackson received his doctorate from Cornell University in 1987 and worked until 2000 as an accelerator physicist at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The Loma Linda proton therapy synchrotron, that has treated over 17,500 cancer patients (more than any other treatment center) was constructed at Fermi with Dr. Jackson helping while also leading the beam instrumentation group. He left Fermilab in order to market antiprotons generated at Fermilab for applications in medicine, homeland defense, and interstellar space propulsion. In 2012 he was awarded the United States patent for the treatment of cancer patients with antiprotons. During that time he also used his company to expand and upgrade the beam detectors used by Loma Linda and also served on a review panel for the Massachusetts General Hospital proton therapy facility. He was co-recipient of the 1999 IEEE Accelerator Technology Award for the development and successful construction of the last major particle physics accelerator in the United States. He served as the program chairman for the U.S. Particle Accelerator Conference, is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and a Senior Member of the IEEE. He has published over 300 scientific articles and his work has been profiled in such magazines as Scientific American and Popular Mechanics.
